wow, a baby horse she was born 2/20/09?

By admin on Jan. 25, 2010.

i need a good web site that will tell my lil brother how to take care of a baby horse. its a girl so dose that make it a fol or a colt? he got the mare as a gift and come to find out she was pregnant what do we do?she was born 2/20/09.

What a wonderful surprise! A baby horse is called a foal with no distinction as to sex. Girls are fillies, and boys are colts. Foals are easy to care for, just leave them with mom, feed mom well, provide room for the baby to run and play, and give them attention to get them used to people. They will start eating with mom when ready and just add more as they eat more. I really don’t know about web sites, but there are numerous books on the subject available at libraries or any good feed store. Good luck with your bonus!

  2. The vet should come out and check the mare to make sure the placenta is all out. The foal is a filly. She needs to have the umbilical cord checked too. There are some shots, which may depend on where you live. How warm is it where the baby is?

  3. actually a Filly is a female foal. a foal is just a baby horse in general(like puppy or kitten, but for horses) and lastly, a colt is a male foal.

i’d just buy some books and ask some local people if they can help or contact the old owners and ask them(maybe they bred horses previously and they could help)

  5. wow thats not too good, not knowing th foal was coming… she is a filly. you should def call out a vet asap and make sure the foal is healthy. it isn’t all fun and games taking care of a foal, so your brother should probably find someone who maybe lives around you who can come and help him out.

  6. Definitely have the vet come out. You’re lucky the pregnancy and consequent birthing was free of problems! The vet will check the mare, check the foal, and will be able to give you a "starter plan." For right now the mare will take care of her foal. Make sure she is getting plenty of good quality hay and grain as she needs to be producing lots of milk. I would also recommend bedding the stall deeply for the benefit of both dam and filly (proper name for a baby female horse). Good luck!

  7. and they didnt even tell u!?!?!?
well get a vet in asap, he/she will give the lil girl a check up and he/she will tell u wat to do with the filly from then.

NOTE: a foal is all gender baby horse. a filly is a female foal(baby horse) and a colt is a male foal(baby horse)

  8. The baby is a foal regardless of gender. A female foal is a filly.

Call the vet, if you haven’t already, and have them come out. Our local vet suggests that foals are visited by the vet in the first 8-12 hours after they are born. When they come out have them tell you what you need to know.

The actual care of the foal is pretty simple in most aspects – take good care of the mare and she’ll take good care of the foal. But there are many things you need to know. It’s a very complicated and extensive subject.

The best thing you can do is have someone explain it to you in person – it will save a lot of confusion and you don’t want to misinterpret what someone says for the sake of the mare and foal.

    Good luck.
