why did St. Jerome say never look a gift horse in the mouth?

By admin on Mar. 7, 2010.

It appears in ‘On the Epistle to the Ephesians".

Heavens to Betsy! You should ALWAYS look a gift horse in the mouth. It may need enough dental work to bankrupt you.

What is the meaning of the idiom "don’t look a gift horse in the mouth"?

By admin on Mar. 4, 2010.

Please answer immediately…

used to tell someone to be grateful for something that has been given to them, instead of asking questions about it or finding something wrong with it.

What horse gifts do you want for the holidays?

By admin on Mar. 1, 2010.

Besides a horse (the best gift ever!) what horse related gift do you want most for Christmas, Hanukkah, your birthday? Saddle? Other tack? Horse game (DS, Wii, software)? Horse books or games? Clothing? What else? Name your top three choices!

Well, my mom just had a heart attack and subsequent open heart surgery. The best gift ever will be that she’s okay.

Everything else, and I mean EVERYTHING is just frosting on the cake.

I could use some new breeches and some warm riding gear and that’s it. I’m not asking for anything this year, though.

ADD: Thank you, Leanne. How very kind of you! I wish more people appreciated all the wonderful things about parents.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth?

By admin on Feb. 26, 2010.

Where on earth did this expression come from? Its such a bizarre thing to say but used so often. I would love to know its origins if anyone has any ideas

In olden times, it was a way of saying don’t inspect the teeth of a horse (the olden time way to do a quick check of a horse’s health and age) when someone has given it to you as a gift. That would bespeak ingratitude of a sort.

I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth here?

By admin on Feb. 23, 2010.

I was in traffic court recently (on a trumped up charge) and the judge said to me,"You’re driving record appears clean". Now I know that’s not true because I had a ticket for running a red (that turned red mind you) 5 months prior and a speeding ticket 3 years before that. How could they not know?

Not all cities turn thier traffic offenses into the national or state data bases. don’t know why but they dont’.

And often while it would show up, a ticket over 3 years ago is not normally taken into consideratioini.

And then on the 5 month old ticket, often it can take months for some departments to show thier convictions onto the state system.

so it is possible, he did not worry about a 3 year old ticket and the other one is not in the system yet.
with court backlogs, I have seen it take 5 months to a year for some courts to enter the information into the state system.

Where can I get a gift certificate for horse back riding in Fairfield county Connecticut?

By admin on Feb. 20, 2010.

This gift certificate would be for pleasure.
Not for lessons. Just a one time deal.

what do you mean for riding. Like a place to take lessons or for pleasure?

edit-
i don’t know of any gift certifacets but there are hunterpaces and benifit trail rides in the area. Also since it is basiclly winter and riding conditions on the trail arn’t very good some people don’t rent horses in the winter. i would try the links below. hope it helps :(

What is A Trojan Horse Gift?

By admin on Feb. 17, 2010.

Imagine that one of your peers gives you a gift but your mother tells you that she thinks the gift is a "Trojan Horse."
Explain what the mother means by using the term "Trojan Horse."

The enemy soldiers hid inside the giant wooden horse which was rolled up to the gates of Troy. The Trojans took it in, thinking it was a terrific gift, then the soldiers climbed out during the night and took over the City.

So, a Trojan gift is a gift that’s not what it appears to be.

Would you look a gift horse in the mouth?

The assistance, described as "humanitarian aid" by Venezuela’s embassy in Washington, deepens an ongoing spat between leftist President Hugo Chavez and Bush, It was Bush who calls Chavez “a threat to democracy” in Latin America.
Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has expressed concern over whether the sales are "part of an unfriendly government’s increasingly belligerent and hostile foreign policy" toward Washington.
Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican from Kentucky, has said he wanted to find out if the program was "part of a larger political agenda."
Venezuela supplies about 15 percent of U.S. oil imports.
In a backlash against the fuel program, one Texas-based religious organization has promoted a boycott of Citgo to protest Chavez’s confrontation with the U.S. government.
Venezuela, where per capita income is about one tenth that of the United States, will provide 4.8 million gallons of heating oil at a 40 percent discount.
Meanie, are you for real? Congress takes bribes all the time. Organized crime is alive and well in the USA, some call it Congress. If the politicians can’t roll over for a buck then Congress would be empty.

whenever i see a gift horse i’m reminded of two things, beware of greeks bearing gifts and if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
